Special Notes on MUSEUM MOHAIR

Our Mohair
and the Environment

For over 28 years, a Joseph Noble mohair has long been considered the industry standard for quality, color, dependability and value. Possessing a product upholstered in a Joseph Noble mohair has the intrinsic ability to elevate any environment.

ENVIRONMENT -- Our mohair is truly a product of nature. Originating from the Angora goat raised in South Africa, the hair itself is harvested by careful sheering, causing no physical harm to the goats themselves. Subsequently, 99% of the yarns used in our mohair products are made of natural, compostable fibers.

CHEMICALS -- While our mohair product is very durable, the individual mohair yarns are relatively delicate. The uses of chemicals or harsh production methods are not used during processing, and are manufactured with the most chemical-free methods. The amount of water, as well as the condition of the water after dying, is monitored according to the strict auspices of the official Dutch Water Management authorities in Holland. In addition, we can state that our finished product gives off no emission of dangerous compounds such as solvents, formaldehydes or V.O.C.’s (volatile organic compounds).

FLAMMIBILITY -- Our mohair has, from its nature, a self-extinguishing flammability. This means that no chemical compounds must be used to make the fabric fire retardant.
By its nature, the fabric is repellent to dirt, thereby eliminating any current methods of chemical cleaning. Regular vacuuming and brushing will further extend the lifetime of this amazing product.

TRANSPORATION -- We currently consolidate our international shipments, allowing us to greatly reduce the environmental impact of smaller overseas shipments. Whenever possible, we combine our national deliveries by region, thereby allowing us to greatly reduce the number of trucks picking up and delivering goods (and in many cases helping to streamline the delivery process for many of our clients.)

SUSTAINABILITY – Our mohair is not only strong, but highly sustainable. Joseph Noble mohair used in public spaces (such as theatres) can withstand extended usage for as long as 10-15 years. Once it is time to dispose of the fabric, composting is possible with no chemical or toxic residues left behind.

RESPONSIBILITY -- For Joseph Noble, a responsible business undertaking goes further than having a high quality product. From its origin, through its production, to the finished product and beyond, our mohair creates minimum damage to the environment. Our committed goal to constantly be aware of our environment, as well as our contribution to the planet, has resulted in obtaining the ISO14001 Certification for Environment Care (www.iso.org) for each one of our handsome mohair products.

The Handling of
Pile Fabrics from Joseph Noble

Joseph Noble has been selling velvet and mohair to the contract and residential marketplace for over 27 years. We take pride in working with mills whose manufacturing capabilities ensure a first-rate product for us and our clients. We also make a great effort at our facility to handle these products in a manner that honors the nature of their overall construction so that every workroom receives our product in a first-rate condition.

We thought we would reiterate our pile fabric shipping and handling procedures so that you can be sure that you always receive the top quality products expected from Joseph Noble.

Our velvets and mohairs are triple-inspected before being shipped – once at the mill level, again upon receipt at our warehouse and a third time before they leave our facility. While inventoried in our warehouse, these items are suspended to avoid being crushed or damaged (see bottom of page).

These products are carefully prepared for shipping by being double packaged in specially-designed containers to prevent damage in transit. Each shipment is clearly labeled “CRUSHABLE FABRIC/LAY FLAT OPEN IMMEDIATELY” in a red and black 100 pt font on the outside of the package.

An information sheet outlining our terms and directions for the receiving workroom is always included within the first yard of the fabric roll stating:

ATTENTION WORKROOM

IMPORTANT -- PLEASE READ BEFORE CUTTING THIS FABRIC

PLEASE EXAMINE THIS FABRIC CAREFULLY
FOR COLOR, QUALITY AND QUANTITY

NO CLAIMS OR ALLOWANCES WILL BE ALLOWED AFTER THIS FABRIC HAS BEEN CUT OR ALTERED IN ANY WAY

NO CLAIMS OR ALLOWANCES WILL BE MADE AFTER
14 DAYS FROM RECEIPT OF FABRIC

We have little control once a package leaves our warehouse, and no control over what happens to the product once received at the workroom. Damage to the fabric, including crushing of the pile and “bar markings” across the horizontal length of the fabric, can occur when objects are placed atop the package, the package is allowed to lie unwrapped on a bin or shelf or set on-end (even for a short period of time). It is imperative that the proper care is taken in the handling of goods received at the workroom so that the products remain in their first-rate condition.

Should you have any questions about our return policy, please refer to the Terms and Conditions posted on www.josephnoble.com.

Information from
The National Mohair Association

Upholstery fabrics must be cared for on a regular basis in much the same way all materials used daily are, because of frequent exposure to dust and dirt. One should not allow this soiling to penetrate deeply, because it will then become more difficult to remove. The right care and cleaning can prolong the life of your upholstered furniture. When purchasing, take into account the proposed area of use (degree of wear such as in a living room or guest room). Also consider the color factor, with lighter colors, soiling shows up more so than with darker shades.

REGULAR CLEANING OF YOUR MOHAIR
Brush mohair with a firm clothes brush in the direction of the nap and/or vacuum with the upholstery nozzle. A quick refresher for your mohair upholstery is to rub with a slightly damp leather cloth.

STAIN REMOVAL
Naturally the professional upholstery cleaner has more experience and opportunity. Nevertheless, he cannot be called in for every small thing. To do it yourself, please follow these instructions, exactly: basically all damp spots should be treated with lukewarm water as soon as they occur; they then should be blotted with an absorbent towel or paper. If water alone does not suffice, use a thin solution of carpet or upholstery shampoo (following the manufacturer’s directions).

Never apply the cleaning solution directly onto the upholstery. Always use a white cloth. Apply the dampened cloth to the stain working from the edge towards the middle. Rub out the remainder of the shampoo with a damp cloth.

Don’t rub too hard as this may affect the surface structure. The last rubbing should always be in the direction of the nap. Always make sure that the upholstery fabric dries immediately (using a blow dryer if necessary) and only put into use when completely dry.

Dried-on stains can be treated much like the remains of damp stains. Should stain residue remain, mop it up with a white cloth dampened with soluble benzene.

NAP CHANGE IN THE PILE / SEATING AREAS
More or less conspicuous changes in the nap (in the seating area or shiny from use) are a result of body pressure, heat, moisture from the air and body as well as the type of inner padding used. This is typical for velour’s and does not impair its quality. With careful brushing, either against the nap or by applying a damp cloth and leaving it overnight, the shine in the seating almost always disappears.

FEATURES OF MOHAIR VELOURS
Due to the special structure of the mohair fiber, small knots may sometimes appear in spinning and weaving.

Certain so-called black hairs, which do not absorb color in the dyeing process, might appear in the finished fabric.

These characteristics do not in any way reflect depreciation in quality, but in effect underscore the natural character and authenticity of mohair velvets.

Shorn from the Angora goat, the rich luster, soft hand and outstanding durability of this precious fiber provides Joseph Noble Mohair with its highly distinctive and lasting qualities. With its affinity for dyes, Joseph Noble Mohair reproduces colors that have an unmatched clarity and a halo-like glow. Joseph Noble Mohair’s do not crush, mat or pill. Dust and dirt are easily brushed off. Valued for its flame resistance and high sound absorbency, Joseph Noble Mohair is ideal for public places as well as residences.
